{"id":1906,"date":"2017-04-21T19:05:11","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T23:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.businessconflictmanagement.com\/blog\/?p=1906"},"modified":"2017-04-21T19:05:11","modified_gmt":"2017-04-21T23:05:11","slug":"stories-mediators-tell-world-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.businessconflictmanagement.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/stories-mediators-tell-world-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Stories Mediators Tell &#8211; World Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many of the presentations at the ABA Dispute Resolution Section Meeting introduced new books in the field.\u00a0 A notable example was <a href=\"https:\/\/cardozo.yu.edu\/directory\/lela-p-love\">Prof. Lela Love<\/a> and her co-editor <a href=\"https:\/\/cardozo.yu.edu\/directory\/glen-parker\">Glen Parker<\/a> explaining the ongoing effort to open up mediation to people around the world who have may not have experienced it by compiling of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.americanbar.org\/ebus\/store\/productdetails.aspx?productid=214123\">Stories Mediators Tell<\/a>&#8221; &#8212; now supplemented by &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.americanbar.org\/ebus\/store\/productdetails.aspx?productid=269187072\">The World Edition.<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/shop.americanbar.org\/PersonifyImages\/ProductImages\/269187072.Def.L.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The volume is purposely anecdotal.\u00a0 The idea is to \u201cpopularize\u201d mediation by telling stories. \u00a0Prof. Love explained that stories educate and inspire, educate and entertain people.\u00a0 We are more eager to hear stories than to be taught.\u00a0 The volume perfectly vindicates her proposition.<\/p>\n<p>The hour-long panel consisted, suitably, of a group of internationally-based mediators who told their stories.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/imimediation.org\/thierry-garby\">Thierry Garby<\/a> of France told the story of a Parisian theatre that, 100 years after its construction, was remodeled and provoked neighborhood complaints because of noise. Five expert reports, 13 parties and 12 years of litigation yielded no acceptable outcome.\u00a0 The remedy would cost $8,000,000 but, Garby discovered, the building was worth $250,000.\u00a0 It settled in two hours. \u00a0Once he discovered this anomaly,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cristinacamelino.com\/\">Maria Camelino<\/a> of Argentina said that she uses media to resolve conflict. In her country, in 2002, there was dramatic political upheaval and economic crisis.\u00a0 She initiated a conflict resolution on Argentine TV, offering advice from social workers and others on a particular case. Lawyers could bring cases to the panel and viewers could learn from them.\u00a0 Subsequent mediation parties would be invited to watch clips from the show, changing their perspectives.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedr.com\/solve\/profiles\/?p=jawadsarwana\">Jarwad Sarwana<\/a> of Pakistan related an instance of a trademark mediation that was interrupted with the afternoon prayer towards Mecca, including the invocation by an imam to pray for peace. The mediation was about to re-commence after afternoon prayers but first one party asked to speak.\u00a0 He reported having been moved by prayer, and proposed that he and his chief adversary discuss directly an incident that had occurred in Frankfurt years before. \u00a0Clarity was thereby achieved by means seemingly unrelated to, but likely possible only through, mediation.<\/li>\n<li>Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedr.com\/solve\/profiles\/?p=srdansimac\">Srdan Simac<\/a> of Croatia told a Christmas story.
