{"id":1768,"date":"2016-06-25T03:24:54","date_gmt":"2016-06-25T07:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"\/blog\/?p=1768"},"modified":"2016-07-06T11:02:04","modified_gmt":"2016-07-06T15:02:04","slug":"david-hoffman-inspires-us-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.businessconflictmanagement.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/david-hoffman-inspires-us-again\/","title":{"rendered":"David Hoffman Inspires Us Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonlawcollaborative.com\/blc\/people\/attorneys\/david-hoffman.html\" target=\"_blank\">David Hoffman<\/a>\u2018s capacity to lead by inspiration is unparalleled. \u00a0When you attend a program or lecture by David, you feel as if he\u2019s talking to you over a table, sharing stuff that matters to him in the hope that it will matter to you, too.<\/p>\n<p>David recently gave a TEDx Talk in Northern Illinois University, and happily it is posted at YouTube. \u00a0It\u2019s titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JKXv1_Sqe_4\" target=\"_blank\">Lawyers as Peacemakers. \u00a0Really?!? Yes, Really!<\/a> \u00a0His talk, couched as a summary professional memoir, is actually a testimony to the core impulse of dispute resolution \u2014 the desire to help parties to resolve the conflicts that burden them.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mediate.com\/people\/dhoffman150.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>David is the only one of my heroes who regularly cries when he tells stories. \u00a0He cries in this TED Talk, too. \u00a0I attribute this proclivity not to David\u2019s tendency to be emotionally labile, but to reflect his practice of entering the very beating human pulse of conflict. \u00a0He moves easily from a war story of a family conflict to the teachings of two Buddhist priests. \u00a0This is because David\u2019s approach to his work is as transparent and committed as his approach to his life. \u00a0He seeks to live in a way that reduces the conflict that surrounds us \u2014 whether or not he is in a formal mediation. \u00a0The way he thinks, is the way he lives, is the way he works, is the way he talks, is the way he thinks.<\/p>\n<p>It is no surprise, then, that David cites Gandhi in his talk, urging us to \u201cbe the change you want to see in the world.\u201d \u00a0In the talk he \u201cannounces\u201d that, as of that day, he will forthwith be a lawyer who is a \u201cfull-time peacemaker,\u201d and \u201cjust say no\u201d to litigation as part of his practice. \u00a0He sees the role of a lawyer as assisting parties to heal their rifts.<\/p>\n<p>David Hoffman as peacemaker. \u00a0Really, David?!?
